چکیده
side effect of human population growth and technological development. Unlike many other environmental stressors, casual observers often become aware of chemical pollutants only after some catastrophic event, such as an oil or chemical spill that kills many animals. Typically, chemical discharges that can be seen or smelled—or barren mine spoils (Fig. 1) and fishless streams—call attention to chemical pollutants. More commonly, sophisticated instruments are needed to detect toxic chemicals. The effects of chemical contaminants on individual organisms, populations, and ecosystems may also be difficult to detect. The imperceptible accumulation of DDT (Table 1) and its metabolites in bald eagles and other predatory birds led to eggshell thinning, reproductive failure, and, ultimately, greatly reduced populations over much of North America (for example, Carson 1962; Colborn 1991; Wiemeyer et al. 1993). Much of this happened before the problem was understood sufficiently to take the steps necessary to correct it; populations of bald eagles are now recovering (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 1994). Effects of other contaminants on less visible species may be more subtle and localized. In addition to killing plants and animals, contaminants may reduce growth and reproduction or cause animals to avoid contamiEnvironmental Contaminants

Status and Trends of the Nation's Biological Resources - Nonindigenous Species
natural resource management and conservation biology today. The ability of nonindigenous species to alter population, community, and ecosystem structure and function is well documented (Elton 1958; Mooney and Drake 1986; Vitousek et al. 1987; Drake et al. 1989). Ecosystem-level changes that alter water, nutrient, and energy cycles; productivity; and biomass directly affect human society. Ecosys...

متن کاملApplying Fuzzy Logic to the Estimation of Environmental Degradation Trends in Iran
During recent years several attempts have been made to incorporate environmental and natural resources degradation into national accounts. GNP as measured by the traditional system of national accounts does not consider environmental degradation caused by inefficient exploitation of natural resources. While the complete omission of environmental impacts is not possible, there could be an optima...
متن کاملEffect of Composting Process on Some Chemical-Biological Properties and Heavy Metals Behavior of Municipal Sewage Sludge as Affected by Various Bulking Agents
The present study tries to investigate the effect of composting process on some properties and heavy metals status of two municipal sewage sludge (MSS) as affected by three different organic bulking agents (BAs) at three levels (10%, 25%, and 45% V/V). According to the results, the composting process could reduce the fecal coliform to class A, a reduction more obvious in treatments with BAs tha...
